1937

April 1st  – Reforms act separates Burma from India.

1942

April 5th – Seventeen Karen village headmen in Papun are executed by BIA forces after an attack kills a BIA officer. Two of the village headmen were reportedly bayoneted to death; the victims included three teachers, an agricultural supervisor, and several other prominent elders

1947

Constituent Assembly forms which due to a KNU Boycott results in 20 seats being given to the pro-government KYO led by San Po Thin.

1949

April 4th - Amid successful attacks on a number of towns and villages by KNDO and other ethnic forces and while the siege at Insein is ongoing a meeting is arranged between Saw Ba U Gyi, U Nu and army commander Ne Win. Saw Ba U Gyi signs a treat a treaty granting amnesty to the Karen troops and allowing Karen civilians to keep their weapons. The agreement is rejected however after Hunter Tha Mwe and Maj. Aung Sein in Taungoo object.

1954

Operation Shinbyushin sees the Burma Army capture large swathe of land previously held by Karen and KMT forces.

1956

A number of ethnic groups including the Karen, Karenni and Pa-oh form the DNUF.

1960

April 29th – NLA formed

1961

April 13th – Gen Min Maung, Taungoo born commander of the first Karen rifles and holder of the British Military Cross who was responsible for seizing Taungoo and Tantabin in 1949, is killed in a Burma Army operation.

1963

April – the third Karen National Congress is held at the Kasawa Camp. KNU Presdient Saw Hunter Tha Hmwe, who called for the congress at the same time a government amnesty was offered to all insurgents,  fails in his attempts to have the Socialist and Anti-imperialist elements removed from the KNU. He and 5PthP Brigade commander Lin Tin walk out and move to 5PthP Brigade.   

1964

April – 5th Brigade commander Lin Tin surrenders to the government following in the footsteps of Saw Hunter Tha Hmwe who in his speech announcing the signing of an agreement with BSPP claimed that the KRC had been following ‘God’s Path’ that the Old Testament had shown the way for ‘the Karen national revolution’, while the New Testament would show the ‘way to live our life.’ Not long after he would give his support to the Burmese Way to Socialism stating that ‘This programme is not something new to us. We Karen have practiced this kind of programme since the days of our ancestors.’

1989

April 20th – The Thu Mweh Hta Pagoda, which would eventually be part of the cause the KNU-DKBA split, is officially consecrated by U Thuzana

1990

April 23rd – Reuters reports that the KNU claim 400 Burmese troops have died during the offensives against the Karen so far.

1991

April – Rangoon TV reports that the dry season offensive against the Karens as captured 10 camps and killed over 100 rebels.

1992

April 27th – Large scale offensive involving over 10,000 troops against Manerplaw is suspended. Rangoon radio announces ‘The Karen state offensive has been suspended for the sake of national unity and goodwill’.

1993

April – Bo Mya sends an open letter to Than Shwe calling for a nationwide ceasefire and the release of all political prisoners as prerequisites before peace talks can begin.

1995

April – DKBA supported by Burmese troops burn down a refugee camp in Thailand.

1998

April 18th – The KNU Forestry Secretary Padoh Aung San defects to the DKBA taking with him over 28,000,000 baht of KNU revenue.

2003

April 20th – KNLA blow up parts of the Yadana Gas line in a strategy to strengthen the KNU’s position before talks.
