July 17th – The Karen National Defence Organisation formed. |
1950 |
July 17th – The first Karen Congress since open conflict is held in Papun and attended by representatives from the delta as well as observers from the Mon and Karenni. |
1956 |
July 11th – The Second National Congress ends near Papun. The second Phase programme is finally declared under the slogan of ‘Peace within our Country’ overtly mixing socialism and communism. |
1988 |
July 23rd – Open fighting occurs between Mon and Karen forces over the lucrative trading gate at Three Pagodas Pass. |
1989 |
July 7th – A Karen UG plants a bomb that explodes at a Syriam Oil Factory. |

Manerplaw Agreement finalised |
1993 |
July – Bo Mya visits the US and meets with State Department Officials. |
1995 |
July 24th – A meeting is held where it is expected that Gen. Bo Mya, heavily criticized over the loss of Manerplaw, will step down to be replaced by Shwe Hser. No leadership change is made. |
1997 |
July – HRW/Asia reports that it believes ‘…as economic interests continue to grow [between Thailand and Burma]; all of the 115,000 refugees living in camps in Thailand will be increasingly vulnerable to push-backs.’ |
