June 14th – Karen Massacres by BIA troops prompted by the Myaungmya attacks are finally halted when the Japanese intervene. |
1945 |
June – Mountbatten puts forward his proposed ‘Policy towards the Burmans’ in which he recognises the legitimacy of Aung San and the Patriotic Burmese Forces regardless of any previous anti-British actions. |
1949 |
June 14th – A meeting is held at Thaton and the provisional Prime Minister Saw Ba U Gyi announces the creation of ‘Kawthoolei’ on Free Karen Radio. |
1953 |
June 9th – A meeting is held at Waythaung Village in the delta. Mahn Ba Zan and Sgaw Ler Taw plan for a socialist vanguard party, the KNUP, emphasising the Karen struggle as one of class as well as identity. |
1963 |
June 11th – KNUP send a delegation to 5th Brigade to see if a joint delegation can be sent to attend peace talks offered by Ne Win. Hunter Tha Hmwe. refuses to attend any peace talks, however after the arrival of a representative from Ne Win he changes his stance and attends on his own. |
1968 |
June 21st – Mahn Ba Zan and Bo Mya dissolve the KNLC and form the KNUF at To Da Plaw. |
1982 |
June – KNLA shoot down two Burmese helicopters supplied by the US to the Ne Win regime for drug suppression. |
1983 |
June – Burmese offensive take the strategic Naw Taya peak which overlooks a number of KNU bases along the Moei. |
1985 |
June 16th – Myawaddy is shelled by KNLA forces. |
1996 |
June 6th – Third round of peace talks begin this time led by Tamla Baw |
1997 |
June 9th – General Bo Mya refuses to restart talks with the Junta while military offensives and human rights abuses continue. |
2003 |
June 2nd – Ex-6th Brigade commander Shwe Hser dies. |
