BANGKOK (UPI) -- Burma's military authorities have transferred the
chief of police in the capital, Rangoon, and his deputy as a result of
an incident in which a group of pickpockets allegedly killed a student.
In an unusual case of swift justice, state-run radio in Burma said
the four pickpockets were sentenced to death by a special court on
Monday, just two days after the alleged murder.
The radio reported late Wednesday that ``Inquiries have revealed that
a lack of crime prevention in the (Rangoon) Division was responsible for
the occurrence of the incident.''
It said the chief of police in Rangoon, Col. Thein Lin, has been
transferred to the remote northwestern state of Arakan.
The broadcast said Lin's deputy was also transferred out of Rangoon,
while another senior police officer in the capital was given early
retirement.
