What Adventure? Life in Pagan is No Picnic!
Bolder Adventures, specialists in Southeast Asia travel, is advertising
16-day tours to Pagan from the USA. The first tour was in February '94,
and the next tour is scheduled for November '94. It will be led by Joe
Cummings, a former Peace Corps worker in Thailand and author of Lonely
Planet Guides to Thailand, Burma, Laos, and Indonesia. Write and let
Cummings know your thoughts about promoting foreign exchange-generating
tourism in a military dictatorship where human rights abuses are rampant.
For example, historic Pagan is notorious for forced relocations. Entire
communities were moved to inhospitable sites to make Slorc tourism more
profitable for the military.

You might encourage Cummings to engage in a little "demo-tourism," which,
similar to eco-tourism, would mean educating tourists, not contributing
to the dictatorship, and wherever possible doing some good.
