BANGLADESH AND BURMA DEPLOY TROOPS ALONG BORDER

DHAKA, May 30 (Reuter) - Bangladesh said it has sent reinforcements to its
border with Burma after Burmese troops allegedly abducted a fisherman on
Monday, security sources said.

They said the Burmese border guards also opened fire on Bangladesh border
security forces as they were picking up the Bangladeshi, who was fishing on
the Naf river.

"We didn't fire back but have mobilised additional troops on the border as
tension mounted after the incident," one officer said.

Burma had also deployed troops along the border, he said but gave no other
details.

He said Bangladesh had lodged an official protest about the incident with the
Burmese authorities on Monday, and had demanded the return of the fisherman.

Dhaka also asked Rangoon in a letter for a meeting between their border
security forces to discuss the incident.

The sources said 46 Bangladeshi fishermen were being detained in Burma for
allegedly fishing on the Burmese side of the river.
