BANGKOK, Thailand (Reuter) - Burmese military authorities
have arrested a former U.N. worker and four others for
criticizing the government, contacting banned opposition groups
and fabricating anti-government reports, Burma's state media
reported Tuesday.
Action will be taken against former United Nations
Children's Fund (UNICEF) worker Khin Zaw Win, 44, and the four
others according to Burmese law, state television reported in a
broadcast monitored in Thailand.
Khin Zaw Win, a dentist who worked with UNICEF in Rangoon
from 1991 to late 1992, was arrested at Rangoon airport on July
4 as he was about to fly to Bangkok.
He was found to be carrying manuscripts and computer discs
containing anti-government material and a confidential ministry
of energy report, the television report said.
Subsequently arrested were writer San San Nwe; her daughter,
journalist Sein Hla Oo; Khin Maung Shwe; and Ma Myat Mun Mun
Tun. They were described by Burmese media as members of Khin Zaw
Win's group.
The Burmese media said Khin Zaw Win and his group had
"fabricated and sent anti-government reports to some diplomats
in foreign embassies, foreign radio stations and visiting
foreign journalists."
It also said the group "received, collected and
redistributed publications from exiled organizations in the
jungle."
