Subject: PRAVITE GROUPS ACCUSED OF ENCOURAGING THE STAY OF MON REFUGEES

ARMED Forces spokesman Lt Gen Anuson Krisanaserani accused
private groups working with refugees along the Thai-Burma border
yesterday of wanting the Mon refugees to stay in the border area
mso they can work with them.
Non-governmental organisations have accused the Thai authorities
of bulling the refugees when they toof sanctuary on Thai soil.
"These organisations want the refugees to cross into Thai
territory so they can continue their work in the area. This is
in sharp contrast with our policy," said Lt Gen Anuson.
He said the MOn refugees were reparitriated after local
authorities had given them aid.
Anuson said th eThai military had asked Burmese forces not to
atteck the refugees when they return from Thailand.The MOn
refugees wuold be along to stay as long as their lives are in
danger. he said.
"These refugees want to stay in Thailand . This is something we
cannot allow".
Lt Gen Anuson said the allegations by NGOs that the Mon refugees
were badly treated had damaged the country and needed
clarification.(BP)
