DISSIDENTS TO RALLY IN SOLIDARITY WITH
BESIEGED KARENS.
TOKYO, Feb. 10 Kyodo - Myanmar dissidents will
demonstrate in front of their country's embassy in
Tokyo on Sunday to denounce the military rulers for
their ethnic and human rights violations, and
destruction of pro-democracy movements, dissident
groups said Friday.

The "(military) attacks on the ethnic Karens, and the
stalling of negotiations between dissident leader Aung
San Suu Kyi and the ruling State Law and Order
Restoration Council (SLORC) clearly show that
SLORC has no intention to solve Burma's political
problems by peaceful means," said the joint statement.

The statement was issued by the Burma Youth
Volunteer Association (Japan), the International
Network for Burma Relief, the Democratic Burmese
Student Organization and the Burmese Relief Center--Japan.

"Despite the calls of the international community to
release Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political
prisoners immediately and unconditionally, SLORC
continues the arrests unlawfully and never discloses
when she will be released," the statement said.

SLORC troops took over the Karen National Union
(KNU) stronghold of Manerplaw two weeks ago. The
KNU has given refuge to many democracy groups
including members of Suu Kyi's National League for
Democracy and student activists.

This will be the first political movement by the groups
since the junta started talks with Aung San Suu Kyi in
September, they said.

In January Suu Kyi sent a message to the outside
world after five and a half years under house arrest,
reiterating her determination to establish true
democracy in Myanmar.
