Joint Statement of the ABSDF, DPNS and CRDB on the release of
U Tin Oo, U Kyi Maung and other political detainees

                                                                  Date: 17th
march, 1995

It has been announced in Rangoon on 15th March that Slorc has released 31
political detainess including two top leaders of the National League for
Democracy (NLD), Chairman U Tin Oo and U kyi Maung. However, It has also
been reported that 50 pro-democracy activists were detained on 20th February
after a rare public demonstration during the funeral procession in Rangoon
for Burma's first and only elected Prime Minister U Nu in Rangoon.

If the Slorc has the sincere desire to solve the political problems in Burma
by peaceful means, we would like to ask the Slorc:

1. To unconditionally release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political
prisoners including prominent student leaders and the recent detainees at the
time U Nu's funeral.

2. To cease all military operations in the border areas including the current
offensive against the KNU.

3. To abolish the Slorc-controlled National Convention and to engage in a
genuine dialogue with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, democratic leaders and ethnic
leaders concerning national reconciliation and democratic reform.

We earnestly appeal to the international community to contact the following
Slorc embassies, state these three demands clearly and condemn them for the
current abuses by the Slorc against the Burmese people who are struggling for
the re-establishment of democracy and human rights in their land.
