Karenni surrenderes

Karenni(KNPP) surrenders

Burma's official media reports that Karenni rebels have laid down their
arms. The report said, a total of 7,790 members ( with 9,000 weapons ) of
Karenni National Progressive Party "returned to the legal fold".

All ethnic groups and students fighters based on the Thai-Burma border have
been under heavy pressure from the Thai government to surrender to the
Burmese military. Their food and medical supplies have been blocked by the
Thai government. Thai National Security Council and its business associates
are believed to be masterminding the plan.

International pressure to the Thai government is vital for the ethnic and
student groups. If no significant action is taken by the international
community by the beginnig of the rainy season ( June-3 months from now), the
survival of those groups ( particularly Mon and ABSDF, which do not have a
strong economic base as Karen has) is in question.

Tachilek under attack
March 22, 1995

Khun Sa's Mong Tai Army(MTA) made a suprise pre-dawn attack on SLorc army
position in Tachilek.
A statement issued by the Shan State National Congress says, the attack on
Tachilek had three purposes.

1. To retaliate against Burmese government troops who attacked the Shan
village of Tambon Phu Luang on March 10, which left scores of civilians dead
and wounded.

2. To warn the Burmese government that the MTA fighters have the capability
to strike at Burmese forces any time and any where they want.

3. To demonstrate to Karen National Union rebels that they are not alone in
the struggle against the military junta in Rangoon known as the State Law and
Order Restoration Council.
