HON D C BROWN, MP
PREMIER, MINISTER FOR MULTICULTURAL
AND ETHNIC AFFAIRS
PARLIAMENT HOUSE
ADELAIDE
DEAR PREMIER BROWN,
RE: BURMA HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN IN ADELAIDE
I am a Burmese person living in Adelaide for 7 years. In Adelaide,
we have a very small Burmese community - a total of less than 20.
Recently added to the list of Burmese people are those students
who have been continuing struggle against military dictatorship
in Burma.
Although the number of Burmese student in Adelaide is small
- i.e. four alltogether - they will be organizing a campaign
for the release of Burma's Nobel Peace Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi,
and for the peaceful settlement of political conflicts in Burma.
These students with their Australian friends will be collecting
signatures from people in front of the Parliament House on
19 June, from 10:00am to 2:00pm, to celebrate the 50th birthday
of the Nobel Peace Laureate who has been under detention for six
years.
This week, 16-24 June, also marks the National Refugee Week. Our
campaign seek to promote a peaceful resolution of conflicts
in Burma in an attempt to help the problems of Burma's minority
refugees. I myself have been a refugee to Australia since 1992
and therefore I appeal you to support the measure to end the
Burma's refugee crisis. We have made particular appeal in our
campaign that the United Nations be made initiatives to solve
the problems.
I like to appeal you and the members of South Australian
parliamentarians to come out and support our Burmese democracy
movement by signing the petition. We, the Burmese Students and
the people of Burma, will be most appreciative of your support.
I enclosed some campaign materials for your information.
And thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
Yours sincerely
(U NE OO)
