LETTER OF INVITATION

---------------------------The Letter Begin Here------------------------------

Dear Burmese Students and Burma-Wathcers:

You are cordially invited to participate in an Open Society Institute
(OSI) educational seminar for refugee students froom Burma to be held on the
Bloomington Campus of Indiana University from Friday, July 28 through Sunday,
July 30. Thanks to the generous financial support and encouragement provided by
OSI (Open Society Institute) and tireless efforts of volunteers serving on our
Burmese Student Seminar Committee (including refugee students and friends who
live in several Indiana communities), plans have been developed for a
stimulating program to be conducted in the friendly, hospitable environment of
Bloomington, Indiana, a small city in the south-central part of the state.

The first OSI-sponsored Burmese Student Seminar is intended to provide
participants with important information about the Open Society Institute and
various programs being carried out under the auspices of its Burma Project. In
addition, the Seminar is intended to provide for students from Burma who are
now refugees in the United States an opportunity to come together both to share
experiences and to discuss certain needs or concerns, especially with regard to
their current educational pursuits, preparation for a possible postgraduate
career in the U.S and/or in Burma, and so forth. The Seminar program will
therefore be focused on the future, giving particular attention to
education-related topics rather than to political issues. Indeed, it is hope
that such discussion might also inspire among participants a renewed sense of
purpose and a strengthened resolve to do all that is possible while in the
Ubnited States to prepare to help bring about an open society as well as
improved economic condition in Burma through the acquisition of relevant
knowledge and practical experience.

The Seminar Committee has made arrangements to provide University
residence hall accomodations and meals for all participants and to offer
transportation to Bloomington from the Indianapolis International Airport
(located 50 mile from the North of Bloomington).

If you would like to attend the Seminar and are a refugee student from
Burma, you should receive via snail mail a letter of invitation and advance
registration materials either from OSI or from the Office of International
Services at Indiana University. Please fill out the advance registration form
as soon as possible and send it in, along with the required $20 registration
fee, BEFORE JULY 15 in order to avoid late registration charges. OSI is sending
the invitation/registration packets only to OSI grant recipients; International
Services will send invitation/registration packets to all others, including
other refugee students from Burma, non-students, non-Burmese who are interested
in attending the Seminar. For further information or clarification, please
