Statement of the Release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The Committee for Restoration of Democracy in Burma shares in the celebration
of the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The State Law and Order Restoration
Council (SLORC) suffered a major political defeat at the hands of the
international community and the growing strength of the pro-democracy
supporters inside Burma.

This democratic coalition victory over tyranny by strategic nonviolent
struggle is only a indication of the potential strength of this form of
warfare. There are, however, many campaigns remaining in our struggle for the
liberation of Burma so we must not lose the momentum brought about by forcing
the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

This is not an occasion to thank SLORC for doing something it was compelled
to do. It is time to thank the thousands of supporters in the international
community for continuing its attack against overwhelming odds. It is time to
thank the Burmese people who have continued to inspire us with their courage
and perseverance to continue the struggle for democracy. It is time to
continue the attack against the military dictatorship with even greater vigor
and confidence that we will be victorious and that peace with justice will
prevail in Burma.
