Position Statement of the Chin National Front
on
The Torture and Murder of Salai Sang Hlun,
Chairman of the Central Justice Committee of the CNF
1. Democracy and human rights are often violated in any country ruled by
dictators. Peace, security, and cultural heritage are also threatened by
those dictators. In such a country, ethnic minorities lose their funda-
mental human rights, national identity and all their possessions. After
losing them, they have to suffer from untold troubles under constant
fear.
Over decades, ethnic people including Chin nationals have been oppressed
and ill-treated by the military despots and their stooges in Burma. The
national culture of the Chin people and their own land have also been
annihilated.
2. In order to be free from the brutal tyranny, to restore democracy
and human rights, and to preserve its own national identity, the Chin
National Front is determined resolutely to cooperate closely with any
democratic party, peace-loving people and nation. We believe that a
democratic country such as India will stand firmly at the side of the
oppressed people and advocate the restoration of democracy and human
rights. Chin National Front has been working together with India for
almost ten years.
3. The government of India, however, violated the fundamental human
rights, and is, like ASEAN nations, supporting the dictatorship of the
SLORC by enhancing its border trade and relationship with the military
regime in Burma.
4. The most shocking and alarming act of the Indian authorities is the
torture and killing of Salaing Sang Hlun, Chairman of the Central
Justice Committee of the Chin National Front. He was arrested by Indian
Patrol Police on March 31, 1995 at Parva, Mizoram, while working
together with the Indian Government. Then he was handed over to the
Assam Rifles, detained for 23 days without any legal proceedings, and
killed in Assam Rifle's Camp in Aizawl on April 23, 1995. Thawng Mang
and Kung Ling, who were with him for medication purpose, were arrested
as well and their fate and whereabouts remained unknown.
5. India, well known as the world's largest democracy, is practicing
the "constructive engagement" policy of ASEAN and collaborating for
mutual interest with the military junta in Burma which never respect
human dignity and human value, thus the arch-enemy of democracy.
Moreover, its action of torture and massacre of ethnic minority who are
struggling for freedom, fundamental human rights, and democracy, are
completely contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the
progress of the world democratic system.
The Chin National Front will firmly stand and strive its best for
freedom, human rights, democracy, and peace, and wage the struggle on
unswervingly against any government or party which abuses human rights
and obstructs the democratic principal and goal.
