STATEMENT ON THE SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF 8.8.88
        _________________________________________________

                                           Date: August 8, 1995

For 26 years following the military coup d'etat by Gen. Ne Win in
1962, Burma's economic, political and social steadily
deteriorated under military rule.

However, on August 8, 1988, the entire people of Burma, bravely
risked their lives in confrontation against the military
dictatorship.

Finally, under this pressure, the military regime agreed to hold
a general election in 1990, and the NLD led by Daw Aung San Suu
Kyi won a landslide victory. The Slorc military junta then
continued to hold power in defiance of the election result.

At last, the Slorc has released our national leader, Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace laureate, because of the continuing
struggle by the people of Burma.

Always in the history of Burma, the students have been in the
forefront of the struggles by the people against the repression
of any type of dictatorship.

We, the students of Burma, call on the international community
and the people of Burma to continue the struggle democracy and
demand that the Slorc:

1. Unconditionally release all political prisoners including
student prominent leader Min Ko Naing.

2. Abolish its sham National Convention and cancel all its unjust
laws and orders.

3. Offer a dialogue for national reconciliation as soon as
possible.

4. Set up an interim national coalition government led by Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi.

5. Establish genuine peace throughout in Burma.
