 YANGON (Jan. 30) XINHUA - Myanmar and Cambodia will work to further
consolidate
and expand traditional ties of friendship and cooperation, said the official
paper The New Light of Myanmar in its editorial today.
   At the invitation of Chairman of Myanmar State Law and Order Restoration
Council (SLORC) and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and Madame,
Cambodian First Prime Minister Prince Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh
and
Princess Norodom Marie Ranariddh paid an official visit to Myanmar from
January
27 to 29.
   It is an important high-level visit since Myanmar and Cambodia established
diplomatic relations in August 1994.
   The editorial said, "the successful visit has significantly contributed to
the promotion of goodwill, friendship and cooperation between the two
nations.
It has also strengthened the already firm bilateral ties."
   The Cambodian prime minister was accompanied by Minister for Foreign
Affairs
and International Cooperation Ung Huot, Co-minister In-Charge of the Council
of


Ministers and Minister of Tourism Veng Sereyvuth and state secretaries of
some
ministries including Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Economy and
Finance, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of
Environment.
   During the Cambodian prime minister's stay in Myanmar, an agreement on
establishing a joint commission for bilateral cooperation between the two
governments was signed.
   A memorandum of understanding on air link was also signed between the
civil
aviation authorities of the two countries.
   On conclusion of the Cambodian prime minister's visit here on Monday,
Myanmar
and Cambodia issued a joint communique.
   In the communique, Myanmar reaffirmed its policy of friendship with all
countries in the world, particularly with the neighboring countries based on
the
five principles of peaceful co-existence.
   Myanmar also reaffirmed its commitment to closer cooperation with the
nations
of Southeast Asia, particularly with the ASEAN (Association of Southeast
Asian
Nations), the communique said.


   The communique stated, "Cambodia warmly welcomes the acceptance of Myanmar
as
observer of the ASEAN at the next 29th ASEAN ministerial meeting and views
this
new development as benefiting peace, stability and prosperity in the region."
   The communique said the kingdom of Cambodia pursues a foreign policy of
neutrality, friendship and active multiform cooperation with all countries in
the world based on mutual benefits and respect for each other's independence,
sovereignty and territorial integrity.
   On relations between the two countries, the communique said the two sides
agreed to exchange ambassadors at an early date.
   The communique disclosed that the Cambodian side extended an invitation to
the Myanmar leader Senior General Than Shwe and Madame for  a state visit to
Cambodia.
   During his stay in Myanmar, the Cambodian prime minister met the Myanmar
SLORC chairman and prime minister Senior General Than Shwe and exchanged
views
on matters of mutual interest as well as on current regional and
international
issues.
   First Secretary of the Myanmar SLORC Lieutenant General Khin Nyunt also
paid


a separate call on the Cambodian prime minister.
   Observers here believed that Myanmar and Cambodia would further cooperate
on
regional affairs since the two countries are making their efforts to join the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
