Assimilation of Chin people

It was reported on BurmaNet a few weeks back that Burmese soldiers
stationed in Chin State or nearby regions are encouraged to marry
Chin women and convert them into Budhism. Whoever succeeds in
doing so is rewarded with a promotion (at least one rank higher)
as well as a lump sum of money. But if he fails to convert his
wife and he himself becomes a Christian, which is the dominant
religion in Chin State, then he faces a severe punishment.

We have also learned that any Chin soldier (in the Burmese army)
who converts into Budhism is also promised the same rewards.

Forced conversion of rural people by the army is widespread (in
some cases people were forced at gun point to sign a "contract" to
convert into Budhism). It's one of many tactics used by SLORC to
wipe out Chin culture and religion.
