21May96 THAILAND: BURMA AUTHORITIES ARREST 40 DEMOCRACY ACTIVISTS. 09:59 GMT

BANGKOK, May 21 (Reuter) - Military authorities in Burma have arrested at
least 40 democracy activists who were planning to attend a Sunday meeting at
democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's Rangoon home, an opposition source said
on Tuesday. "Starting from yesterday they have arrested more than 40 people.
That is the information we have received but the total could be much
higher," a source close to the opposition leader said by telephone from
Rangoon. Suu Kyi and her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD),
are planning a meeting on Sunday and Monday to mark the sixth anniversary of
a 1990 election in which the party won more than 80 percent of the seats but
was denied power by the ruling military.

The source close to the opposition leader said the activists, all of whom
won seats in the 1990 election, were picked up at their homes throughout the
country.
"In two cases, because the elected representatives were not at home it was
said the authorities detained their wives," he said. "It is obvious," he
said when asked if the arrests were linked to the planned weekend meeting.
