Slorc continues arrest inside Burma

Slorc continues nation-wide crackdown on NLD MPS and supporters    

	Slorc has ordered its regional Military intelligence units and
police forces to arrest all the members of the parliament from National
League for Democracy (NLD) who are planning to attend the an all-party
conference of the NLD to be held at Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's residence in
Rangoon from 26-29 May, according to the reliable source from inside
Burma.
	All the NLD's representatives elected in the 1990 election were
summoned by the local authorities, the source said. According to the order
by the Slorc, all people planning to attending the conference would face
arrest under Section 5(j) of the 1950 Emergency Provisions Act. All the
NLD leaders and Members of the Parliament were forced to sign a guarantee
letter saying that they would not attend the conference. All people who
signed the guarantee letter would be also put under house arrest until the
conference is over.  From May 19-21, 1996, Slorc conducted arbitrary
arrests on 44 Members of the Parliament from NLD under this order.  As the
crackdown is going on, another 40 Members of the Parliament and NLD
leaders including U Win Htein, spokesperson of the NLD were rounded up on
May 22. As of May 22, it is confirmed that over 80 people have been
arrested, the sources from inside Burma said.
	Among the arrested people, U Tun Chit, MP from Pa-an township
Constituency (2), U Sein Bo, MP from Myawaddy township, Karen State
included. In Irrawaddy Division, U Than Tin, MP from Kyeiklatt township
Constituency (1), U Tin Win, MP from Constituency (2), U Thaung Yee, MP
from Danubyu township and Ko Thaung Htut, NLD Youth leader from same
township, Dr. Tin Min Htut, MP from Pantanaw township Constituency (1) and
Mahn Nyunt Thein from Constituency (2), U Saw Lwin from Kyaung-gone
township Constituency (1) and Dr. Hla Win from Constituency (2) were among
the list of arrest. More arrest are being carried out in across the
country. Slorc has also ordered the local police forces, auxiliary fire
brigade and members of USDA to have surveillance on the activities of the
NLD members across the country, the source said.
