Joint venture to build industrial zone near Yangon+
     YANGON, June 28 Kyodo - The Myanmar junta's housing department
and a Singapore consortium signed a joint venture agreement Friday to
build an industrial zone in the Thanlyin-Kyuaktan area south of
Yangon.
     The joint-venture firm, Thanlyin-Kyauktan Development Co., will
develop 12.3 square kilometers of land into a modern industrial zone.
     The Singapore consortium, Sinmardev International Pte. Ltd.,
will initially invest 166.11 million U.S. dollars for basic
infrastructure and development work.
     The agreement says work will begin within six months and
construction of basic infrastructures should be completed in five
years.
     In addition to the development of roads, drainage, water supply,
waste water treatment, electricity and communications, social
infrastructure facilities such as schools, clinics, a fire station
and a police station will also be built.
     The agreement was signed by Albert Hong, representing Sinmadev,
and Arnt Kyaw, director general of the Department of Human Settlement
and Housing Development.
     The Thanlyin-Kyauktan area is linked with Yangon by a
3-km Chinese-built rail and road bridge.
