The Japan Times
(Sunday June 30, 1996)

The Socialist International on Saturday denounced China's
nuclear tests and military rule in Myanmar in resolutions
adopted at the end of its two-day regional meeting in Tokyo.
Keiko Chiba, vice chairwoman of the Social Democract Party,
told a news conference afterward that she will deliver the
resolutions to Chinese Leaders during a trip to Beijing in
July.
The resolution urge countries and international organizations
around the world to refrain from resuming aid to Myanmar until
the military government reopens political dialouge with
democratic movement leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The resolutions strongly denounce the country's military
regime for enforcing a Draconian style of law denying
fundamental human rights and call for the release of all
political prisoners.
A general resolution, one of four, calls on North Korea
to agree to negotiations with the United States, China
and South Korea for peace on the Korean Peninsula. It
also calls for nuclear powers to sign a comprehensive
test ban treaty.
Political parties from 13 nations, including Myanmar,
were represented at the conference, the Asia-Pacific
Committee of the Socialist International.
