S.H.A.N : EXTORTION AFTER RELOCATION
June 18, 1996

People in southern and central Shan State who had been forcibly relocated by
SLORC troops during the months of March and April have to give the soldiers 15
Kyats for only 2 days permission if anyone wants to go to their old villages to
tend their orchards, fields and farms, etc. After 2 days they have to return and
given another 15 Kyats for another 2 days period. For those who have to walk 3-4
hours to reach the place, it is very frustrating and a terrible waste of time.
The people have no choice but to eke out a living in this way since it is
cultivating time and they would surely starve if they do not work.

People from the following areas are suffering from this; Tard Mork and Murng
Khan areas in Lai Kha township, central Shan State, relocated by SLORC No. 66 LB
at Tard Mork village; Murng Son, Nong Tao areas, Ke See township, central Shan
State, relocated by LIB 246 at Wan Zing; Tone Hoong, Nar Poi areas, Nam Zarng
township, southern Shan State, relocated by LIB 247 at Wan Tone Hoong.
