SUU KYI IN LINE OF FIRE
Rangoon, Sept. 2: Burma=92s ruling military government on Monday launched
renewed attacks on the democracy movement and accused the members of the
National League for Democracy of joining forces with dissident exiles bent=
 on
destabilizing the country.

Senior military official told a monthly government news conference they ha=
d
recently made arrests and seized documents that provided some NLD members
had been colluding with exiled =93sub-versives=94 who wanted to unsettle t=
he
government.

=93Their aim, obviously, is to commit in collaboration with the legitimate=
 party,
subversive acts both within and without the country and thus try to put
pressure on the government,=94 said Col. Kyaw Thein, a senior military
intelligence office.

Col. Thein, said authorities would take =93necessary or appropriate=94 mea=
sures
against the NLD, led by Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, =93if and w=
hen
required.=94

Ms. Suu Kyi said on Saturday at least 61 National League for Democracy
supporters had been arrested since May and about 30 have been sentenced to=

long sentences in jail. (Reuter)

JUNTA LASHES OUT AT US
**************************
Rangoon, Sept. 2: Burma=92s military junta lashed out at the United States=
 on
Monday at a rare briefing for foreign journalists, accusing US citizens of=

meddling in Burma=92s internal affairs.

Col. Kyaw Thein, who heads the office of strategic studies and is the junt=
a=92s
third ranked intelligence officer, accused US citizens of trying to bring =
down the
Burmese government by inciting unrest among dissident groups.

=93There are come citizens of superpower nations who are trying to meddle =
in the
internal affairs of Myanmar and thereby disrupt peace and stability in the=

country while lining their own pockets,=94 he said, using Burma=92s offici=
al name.

Mr. Kyaw Thein accused the Americans of giving =93political defiance train=
ing=94 to
Burmese dissidents along the Thai border and in India.

=93Their activists constitute an outright infringement on our sovereignty,=
=94 Mr.
Thein said in front of a row of ministers.

He only stopped short of accusing the US government of involvement in his
speech, but Rangoon-based political analysts said the intelligence officer=
 was
indirectly accusing Washington of meddling in Burmese affairs. (AFP)
