			Junta blocks Suu Kyi summit

	Burmese military authorities detained an unknown number of 
opposition politicians yesterday ahead of a planned meeting at the home 
of Ms Aung SAn Suu Kyi, opposition sources said.

	Several National League for Democracy activists were picked up at 
their homes in the early hours of the morning, the sources said.

	The wife of one of those detained said her husband had been taken 
away at about 2am, "just like in May", when security forces detained more 
than 260 NLD members to thwart a planned party congress.

	Yesterday morning, security forces, including armed riot police, 
blocked off access to Ms Suu Kyi's home, preventing NLD activists from 
going there for the start of a three-day party meeting.

	A second blockade was thrown up at midday around Rangoon division 
headquarters, where some 150-200 NLD delegates wentafter being refused 
entry to Ms Suu Kyi's compound on University Avenue.

	Rangoon-based analysts said it appeared the authorities were 
trying to isolate Ms Suu Kyi, including cutting the telephone line to her 
compound on University.

	They said rumours that Ms Suu Kyi was going to move the meeting 
to the National League for Democracy's (NLD) headquarters in Rangoon had 
led to the nearby roads to the headquarter's entrance being blocked off 
as well.

	They said earlier reports indicated that more than 30 NLD 
representatives had been arrested from the more than 200 delegates 
invited to attend the three-day congress.

	Observers said those who tried to approach Ms Suu Kyi's house 
were told by aremed police they could not go any further.
