Subject: Statement of U.S. State Dept.: Attack on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
U.S. Department of State
96/11/09 Statement: Attack on Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi
Office of the Spokesman
Press Statement by Nicholas Burns/Spokesman
November 9, 1996
Attack on Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the democratic opposition in Burma, was
brutally harassed on Saturday, November 9. While on her way to address
her supporters, her car was attacked by thugs wielding chains and
knives
and equipped with walkie-talkies. After that attack she asked her
supporters to disperse. Her car was attacked a second time as she was
leaving the scene. Her car was seriously damaged. Thankfully, she
herself escaped serious injury.
The United States is outraged by this attack, which took place under
circumstances which are, to say the least, extremely disturbing.
We call on the SLORC, which rules Burma, to punish those responsible
for
this attack, to take every possible means to assure the safety of Aung
San Suu Kyi and to prevent such attacks in the future.
