        CRDB CONDEMNS BURMA?S MILITARY REGIME
Mob attack on opposition leaders orchestrated

November 11, 1996

The Committee for Restoration of Democracy in Burma (CRDB) strongly condemns
the attack on a motorcade carrying Nobel Peace Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
and other leaders of the National League for Democracy (NLD) on November 9th
of this year.

The leader of the Burmese opposition, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, said the attack
was orchestrated by Burma?s military regime. The CRDB agrees with her
completely. In a country where the authority, the State Law and Order
Restoration Council (SLORC) strictly enforces a ban on public gatherings of
more than five persons, it is impossible for two hundred or more people to
gather, much less stage an attack, without approval of the authority.

At a news conference after the incident, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi claimed the
government was using a mass organization it supports, the Union Solidarity
and Development Association (USDA), to harass her. The Burmese leader said,
"They are being used the way Hitler used his organization to harass people in
the most dangerous fashion".

During the attack on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her top aides, the government
security forces who were supposed to be responsible for the safety of the NLD
leaders, stood by and did nothing . The CRDB is gravely concerned for the
safety of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters. Unfortunately, their
safety is in the hands of the generals in Rangoon.

The CRDB urges the international community to strongly condemn this
outrageous and barbarous attack on Burmese pro-democracy leaders. Let the
thugs in Rangoon know that their treacherous and heinous fascist methods are
despicable and unacceptable to the civilized world.

The CRDB also warns the criminals in power and their hired hooligans in
Rangoon that any attack on pro-democracy leaders is an act of treason against
Burma and the Burmese people. NEVER FORGET, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi?s party, the
National League for Democracy, won a landslide victory in the election of
1990 and as such is the only representative of the people of Burma.
