Marathon to be held on Thursday

The Asian Age: Junta cancels marathon to be held on Monday
Bangkok, Dec.26: Burma's military authorities announced on
Thursday that they were cancelling plans to run the seventh annual
International Marathon on December 30. Sate-run radio Rangoon,
monitored in Bangkok, gave no reason for the cancellation. The
announcement was made less than 24 hours after a double bomb blast
at the Kaba Aye pagoda complex which killed five
people and injured 18. The marathon, initially planned for December 14,
had been rescheduled to December 30 after hundreds of students took to the
streets of Rangoon to demand the right to form the union and the release
of detained students. The newspapers in Burma said the blasts were
intended to "cause terror and anxiety among the people," the paper said.
