Suu Kyi leaves house again despite curbs

YANGON, Dec. 30.
Myanmarese democracy leader, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi on Sunday left her
house for the second time since the military Government restricted her
movements in early December, opposition sources said.

Ms. Suu Kyi, who has been confined to her house since December 3,
attended a wedding in the morning then visited a museum honouring her
father -- General Aung San, the revered author of Burma's independence
from Britain.

Sources in the National League for Democracy (NLD) Party said Ms. Suu Kyi
was accompanied by three senior NLD members on Sunday when she left her
compound for the second time since the ruling State Law and Order
Restoration Council (SLORC) restricted her movements on December 3. Ms.
Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel peace laureate who was released from six years of
house arrest in July 1995, on Friday visited the tomb of her mother on
the eighth anniversary of her death. A military spokesman said he did not
know when the SLORC would ease its requirement that Ms. Suu Kyi seek
advance military permission to leave her lake side residence.

He said a recent bombing required the Government to increase its
vigilance. Two bombs exploded at a Buddhist site in a northern Yangon
suburb on Wednesday, killing five persons and injuring 17. The SLORC
restricted Ms. Suu Kyi's movement after nearly 2,000 university students
took to the streets in early December at the start of a series of the
biggest anti-Government demonstrations seen in Yangon since 1988. -- Reuter
