Former NLD men say Suu Kyi's silence will better ties
The Asian Age (New Delhi), 5/2/97.
Rangoon, Feb. 4: Silence from Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu
Kyi would help improve strained relations between the Opposition and the
ruling military junta, an expelled member of her party said on Tuesday.
Mr Than Tun, 47, who was one of two elected National League for Democracy
MPs kicked out of the party last month for an alleged breach of party
regulations, made the comment at an officially-sanctioned press
conference at his house. "I advocate total silence at this time from Aung
San Suu Kyi to improve the situation," he said
The other expelled MP, Mr Thein Kyi, 45 commented, "The NLD is sticking
to its principles all the time ...there should be some give and take by
the NLD leadership."
Both men denied any irregularities in their actions within the NLD. They
said they had recommended that the party review its uncompromising
opposition to the State Law and Order Restoration Council, as the ruling
junta is known. Mr Than said he had sought to meet journalists to urge
SLORC and the NLD "to do something about the present situation." He said
he also wanted to give his side of the story of his expulsion from the
NLD, where he was a central committee member and candidate elected in the
1990 polls. (AFP)
