commander-in-chief, delivered the closing address.

Following a presentation of reports on national development projects by

SLORC Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented an assessment of the current
political situation in Myanmar [ Burma] , relations between Myanmar and

Gen Maung Aye, SLORC vice-chairman, Defence Services deputy
commander-in-chief and army commander-in-chief, delivered an address. He said
successful implementation of national development projects depends mainly on
the
leadership. He said ministers - who are leaders at the central level - and
chairmen of state and divisional LORCs - who are regional leaders - would
have
to go right down to the grass-roots level and closely inspect and supervise
work
in order to achieve success according to the guidance in Snr Gen Than Shwe's
opening address. He pointed out that there should be thorough supervision in
The British Broadcasting Corporation, February 10, 1997

Gen Maung Aye called on commanders of command headquarters and chairmen of

implementing
projects being undertaken in the respective states and divisions by various
ministries. He urged state and divisional LORCs to make energetic efforts to
modernize the nation.

In his closing address, Snr Gen Than Shwe said that general success
achieved
for the current national development is due to concerted and collective
efforts
of responsible personnel who have discharged their duties from appropriate
positions. He urged all to keep up efforts and work hard to achieve greater
success.

He said it is also very essential to strive for all-round progress
harmoniously in all undertakings today. He said it would be necessary to take
note that success in political, economic and social fields were mutually
contributory to one another.

He said constant vigil must be kept against internal and external
destructive
elements who are attempting to cause political instability and disrupt
economic
progress by wrongfully using human rights and democracy causes that are

generally popular today.

He also exhorted everyone to remain alert and be prepared to meet,
resolve,
and overcome problems and dangers that may arise in the country.
