Bangkok, Feb. 13: Ethnic Karen rebels fighting the military government in
Burma burned down and retreated from their own jungle headquarters on
Thursday in the face of an overwhelmingly larger government force.

Thai television and border residents reported that Burmese troops
occupied the razed remains of the Karen National Union base at Teakaplaw,
the second headquarters of the rebel group to fall to the government
since December 1994.

Some 3,000 ethnic Karens have crossed into Thailand to escape fighting, a
senior Thai military officer said on Tuesday. The exodus across the
border began on Tuesday as strongholds of the Karen National Union came
under pressure from troops. (AP, AFP)
