RANGOON, Burma (CNN) --
Ethnic Karen rebels on Tuesday
threatened heightened guerrilla
activity inside Burma after the
military government vowed to keep
troops for as long as necessary at
the Thai-Burmese border where the rebels are based.
For decades, the Karen National Union (KNU) guerrilla
organization has sought greater autonomy from Burma's
central
government. A Burmese offensive against the KNU in recent
weeks has sent thousands of refugees into neighboring
Thailand.
Fifteen other ethnic groups which have signed cease-fire
deals with
the Rangoon government have not given up their arms, but
have
agreed not to wage armed struggle, said senior
intelligence official
Col. Kyaw Thein.
Reuters contributed to this report.
