Subject: NO TO SANCTIONS SOURCE :FAR EASTERN ECONOMIC REVIEW 20/3/97

          BURMA
          No to Sanctions
U.S. executives meeting in Singapore endorsed the Association of
Southeast Asian
Nations' call for "constructive engagement" with Burma and unanimously
denounced isolating the country from the world community. Managers
from 50
firms, including McDonnell Douglas, United Technologies and Chase
Manhattan
Bank, said sanctions against Burma's military regime wouldn't
bring greater freedom
to its people. Imposing embargoes is "arrogant, wrong-headed and
misreads lessons
of history," said former U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig.
