Serge Tchuruk, though head of Alcatel, is still a board director at
TOTAL, along with Cogema's CEO Jean Syrota. Furthermore, Tchuruk is one
of four members of the Committee in Charge of Appointments and
Compensation, including current TOTAL CEO Thierry Desmarest, who is
obviously following in close footsteps his former master, -very close.
Tchuruk set the course, and now Desmarest holds it steady on the TOTAL
helm. Their mission on this Committee: 'to study and submit to the Board
proposals concerning appointment of new members and executive directors,
the latters' remuneration and stock option plans.

You might say that Tchuruk is today France's leading industrialist
(Dassault has got tons of court problems involving hush money to
politicans, bribes, etc). There are not really too many players of
Tchuruk's stature and influence. Today, the French state loves him, and
in business he is known to be nothing less than ruthless.
