Burma-unrest-cities,2ndlead : Buddhist unrest spreads to four
                            Burmese cities

                            (ADDS comment from other sources)

BANGKOK, March 21 (AFP) - Demonstrations by
Buddhist monks have spread
from Mandalay to four more Burmese cities, a
diplomatic source said Friday.

But other diplomats later said they were unable
to confirm the report and Burmese
                            government sources were not immediately
available for comment.

The diplomatic source, who expressed certainty
over the report, also said a curfew
had been imposed in Moulmein, in Tenasserim
division, while protests by monks
were reported this week in Pyinmana, Taungoo and
Prome.

A US embassy spokesman said she had no
information on any spread of
demonstrations outside Mandalay, while a third
diplomat said he had determined
there was no curfew in Moulmein and that there
had been no protest in Prome.

All three diplomats were reached in Rangoon by
telephone from Bangkok.

The monks' demonstrations started at the weekend
in Mandalay in apparent
retribution for the attempted rape of a Buddhist
girl by one or more Moslem men
                            earlier this month.

Monks vandalized mosques and destroyed Moslem
property in a series of incidents.
