JUNTA STEPS UP CAMPAIGN AGAINST SUU KYI

By V.Jayanth
BANGKOK, May 1. Stepping up the campaign against the
prodemocracy leadership, the ruling junta in myanmar
has described it as 'traitors' and 'terrorists' trying
to destroy the country and hurt its people.

One general after another in Yangon appears to be
speaking out on every possible occasion to convey a
message - to the pe- ople - that American sanctions and
anything else that can follow, are the making of the
pro-democracy movement and Ms.Aung San Suu Kyi.But she
is never named.

In his May Day message, the Chairman of the ruling
State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) and the
country's Prime Ministerr, Senior General Than Shwe,
urged workersf to 'crush' the forces seeking to block
investment. He blamed forces both 'inside' and
'outside' the country for the threat to national
development.

Gen. than shwe said foreign efforts to "hinder" the
development of MYanmar were supported by colonialist
"lackeys" in the country, as well as opponents who had
abroad.
