Text, as broadcast, of ''Law No 1/88 of the State Law and Order Restoration
Council the Law onthe elections commission for holding democrat-party general
elections, dated 21st September 1988 11th day of the waxing moon of Tawthalin'' 

 BODY:
   The State Law and Order Restoration Council hereby prescribes the following
Law, in order to guarantee the successful holding of democratic multi-party
general elections in the Union of Burma

   Chapter 1 Title

   (1) This Law shall be known as the Law on the elections commission for
holding democratic multi-party general elections.

   Chapter 2 Organisation

   (2) The elections commission for holding democratic multi-party general
elections mentioned in paragraph two of Announcement No 1/88, dated 18th
September 1988, of the State Law and Order Restoration Council [see FE/0260 B/1]
is hereby assigned its duties.

   (3) The State Law and Order Restoration Council shall have the right to
increase the number of members or to replace vacated seats in the elections
commission for holding democratic multi-party general elections.

   Chapter 3 Rights and duties

   (4) The elections commission for holding democratic multi-party general
elections shall have the following rights and duties

   (a) To work for the successful holding of fair and free democratic
multi-party general elections.

   (b) To draft laws whenever necessary and to submit them to the State Law and 
Order Restoration Council for enactment.

   (c) To draft necessary rules, procedures, orders and directives, and to issue
them.

   (d) To form elections sub-commissions for holding democratic multi-party
general elections.

   (e) To appoint the staff workers needed for the offices of the elections
commission for holding democratic multi-party general elections and its
sub-commissions, to manage matters regarding the office staff or to assign
managerial duties to others.

   (f) To make necessary preparations and arrangements, do whatever is necessary
and seek necessary assistance regarding the successful holding of fair and free 
democratic multi-party general elections. The British Broadcasting

   Chapter 4 General

   (5) All expenses of the elections commission for holding democratic
multi-party general elections and its sub-commissions as well as all expenses
incurred in the holding of general elections are to be paid from state funds.

   (6) The Law on the commission for electing the People's Assembly and People's
Councils at different levels the 1976 People's Assembly Law No 5 is hereby
abrogated with this Law.
