TX-Burma Bill Appeal

BURMA-TEX:						MAY 8, 1997
SUPPORTING BURMA'S DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT
FROM THE HEART OF TEXAS

Texas' Burma Democracy Movement Needs You!
A couple minutes of your time CAN save an important bill to bar the State
of Texas from doing business with corporations that do business with
Burma's brutal military dictatorship.

Burma's State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) has:
 	*Smashed Burma's democratically elected government;
 	*Put Nobel laureate leader Aung San Suu Aung Kyi under house
arrest;
 	*Brutally repressed Burma's democracy movement and ethnic
minorities.
To raise money to buy Chinese arms, the regime has:
 	*Sold off Burma's rain forests to loggers; and
 	*Laundered money from Burmese heroin traffickers, who feed 60
percent of the U.S. heroin supply.

This is why the U.S. government imposed sanctions April 23 that ban all
new U.S. investments in Burma. Fort Worth Rep. Lon Burnam has introduced
a bill, H.B. 2960, to bar the State of Texas from doing business with
companies that do business with the cash-strapped SLORC regime. Burma
activists believe enough votes are in reach to move the bill out of the
House State Affairs Committee, but time is running out in this
legislative session. Please immediately call and/or fax State Affairs
Committee Chair Steve Wolens AND the committee member nearest you. Urge
them to:
 	* Support the bill; and
 	* Call for an immediate committee vote.
