UN ENVOY'S BURMA PEACE MISSION ENDS
=====================================================================

Rangoon, May 10: One of Burma's top generals consented to meet with a
special envoy of the United Nations Secretary General just hours
before the diplomat's four-day peace mission in Burma ended on
Saturday.

Assistant UN secretary general Alvaro de Soto met with Gen. Khin
Nyint, Burma's intelligence chief and a leading member of the State
Law and Order Restoration Council, the group of 21 generals that
rules Burma, the government news agency reported.

The meeting took place at the ministry of defence, but the agency
gave no information about the length of the conference or what was
discussed.

The envoy arrived on Wednesday in Rangoon with the intention of
promoting a dialogue between Slorc and pro-democracy forces led by
1991 Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr De Soto met with Ms Suu Kyi on Friday, but despite meeting with
Burma's foreign minister, no member of Slorc had any contact with the
UN envoy.

The move was seen as a snub by observers in Rangoon. The UN has
strongly condemned Burma's military government for its increased
repression of the democracy movement and extensive human rights
abuses. Ms Suu Kyi has been seeking a dialogue with the generalsaimed
at encouraging a peaceful transition to democratic rule in Burma ever
since she was released from six years of house arrest in July 1995.
