The Protest against the Thai Prime minister visit to Burma held in Sydney

Burmese and Australian students, community and their supporters
successfully held a demonstration against the Thai Prime Minister Chavalit
Yongchiyud's visit to Burma tomorrow.

The protest started at 12.00 Noon on 15.5.1997 at 75 Pitt street at the
Thai consulate in Sydney 50 people, the Australian media and the police
were at the place.

The protest began with the speakers form Burmese and Australian students
and support organizations and shouted the slogans and held posters
including " free Burma Boycott Burma" " Sanctions against Burma Now!" "Stop
Constructive Engagement"                         " Down with ASEAN"

The protesters burnt the picture of Gen Chavalit while shouting " Down with
Dictatorship Down with Chavalit" The students demanded the boycott of Thai
airways which is owned by the Thai government. The offices of the Thai
Consulate and the Thai Airways was emptied as the protesters blocked the
main entrance during the protest.

The protest ended with singing the Burmese students song for the unity and
struggle     "Ah Yea Kyi Pyi" at 1.00 PM.

The protest was organised by the All Burma Students Democratic Front, All
Burma Students' League, National League for Democracy (L.A, Aust), Burmese
Family Sydney, National Union of Students, Free Burma International
Students Solidarity Network
