Demonstration in Canberra (r)

On 27 May 1997, the Buremse community in Australia commemorated the 7th
anniversary of election victory by the National League for Democracy in
order to protest against SLORC's refusal to hand over power, and also to
protest the recent crackdown which has led to 100 arrests of NLD
representatives and members.

Some 80 Burmese activists from Sydney and Canberra gathered in Canberra
and staged a pro-democracy demonstraion in front of SLORC's embassy at
1:00 p.m. Then they proceeded to the Parliament House of Australia
where Sen. Vicki Bourne delivered a message of encouragement to the
gathering. After that, the demonstrators gave an open letter to
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.
