Burmese Opposition To Assemble

Burmese Opposition To Assemble

RANGOON, Burma -- Democracy movement leader Aung San
Suu Kyi will convene a congress of her opposition
party to
challenge the legitimacy of Burma's military regime
despite the
arrests of more than 100 of her supporters, an aide
announced.

The gathering of the National League for Democracy
is set for
May 27, marking the seventh anniversary of
legislative elections
in which the opposition won 82 percent of the vote.
The military
government never allowed that parliament to
assemble, and
yesterday it accused Suu Kyi of attempting a
propaganda stroke
by calling a meeting she knew would provoke mass
arrests and,
                         thus, international protests.

Calling the party congress is one of the biggest
challenges Suu
Kyi can still mount against the regime. Last year,
the government
detained 262 of her followers to prevent her from
conducting a
                         similar congress. -- Associated Press
