Statement By United Burmese Democracy Activists In India
On 7th Anniversary of May 27 1990 General Elections In Burma.
1. 27 May 1997 marks the 7th anniversary of 1990 General
Elections in Burma.
2. Entire oppressed people of Burma voted for National League for
Democracy headed by
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel laureate of 1991. NLD got a
land slide victory in
the election, having won 392 seat out of total 485 places in Burma.
3. But the ruling military junta constantly refuses to recognize the
peoples' desire. And
even after (7) years of their illegitimate rule, the military rulers
are trying in all means to
prolong their rule.
4. The United Nations general assembly has decided that the
result of 1990 general
elections is still legitimate as it is the true will of the people
of Burma.
5. Instead of handing over the state power to the peoples'
elected representatives, the
SLORC detained, arrested, imprisoned and jailed many of them in
successive years.
6. Furthermore, to isolate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, the SLORC
arrested last
year (265) elected representatives of the NLD party when Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi tried
to convene a congress on 27th May 1996. Again in the month of
September of the same
year, the military junta arrested about (800) activists of NLD party
and other supporters
to prevent them from holding the conference.
7. Indifferent to all the appeals and condemnations from
the United Nations and
International communities, the SLORC again has arrested more
than (200) Mps and
political activists in last couple of days to prevent Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi and her
party from holding a commemoration of 7th anniversary of
the 1990 general
elections which falls on 27th May 1997.
8. We are much dismayed to see India, world's largest democracy
country, keeping silent
to all the repression, human rights violations that are going on in
Burma. Being a good
neighbor the people of Burma look at India with a great hope for
its help towards the
restoration of democracy in Burma.
9. ASEAN's constructive engagement policy regarding Burma has been
proved to be a
failure in bringing democracy and peace to Burma. Therefore,
the policy should be
reviewed and at the same time ASEAN should save their reputation
by not allowing a
membership to the Burmese illegitimate regime.
We, the United Burmese Democratic Activists in India, have solemnly
pledged to strive:
1) for the speedy implementation of 1990 general elections;
2) for the abolishment of present sham national convention;
3) for the emergence of a genuine democratic state by holding a
tripartite dialogue
between democratic forces led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, ethnic forces
and SLORC.
