U.N.:Burma increases repressive measures

GENEVA, May 27 (UPI) _ The U.N. Human Rights Commission says it is concerned
by reports
of increased detentions and arrests by the military government in Burma,
known also as
Myammar, in the last few days.

The commission's acting director, Ralph Zacklin, says the arrests involved
members of the
opposition National League for Democracy headed by 1991 Nobel laureate Aung
San Suu Kyi
(``Own Sahn Sew She'').

The military government has restricted Suu Kyi's movements and political
activities since the
Clinton administration imposed economic sanctions earlier this month to
protest human rights
abuses.

Zacklin says he will meet with the Burmese representative in Geneva to
discuss about the
detentions and arrests and to call for respect of international conventions
on human rights.
