	     BURMA'S JUNTA URGED TO RECOGNISE
	     1990 ELECTION VICTORY
	     Tuesday 27 May, 1997 (8:29pm AEST)

Burma's National League for Democracy has urged the ruling
junta to convene a parliament to honour the results of
elections won by the party seven years ago

The statement -- issued to mark the anniversary of the
N-L-D's victory -- said dialogue instead of repression was the
way to solve Burma's political, social and economic
          problems.

The statement was was issued after Burmese riot police
prevented a planned party congress, marking the election
anniversary, at the home of opposition leader Aung San Suu
          Kyi.

The A-F-P newsagency said security forces put up barbed
wire barricades around the house, as well as the nearby party
          headquarters.

The ruling junta said the planned gathering was a propaganda
          ploy.
