			Abim: Defer entry of Myanmar

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement (Abim)
yesterday protested against Myanmar's ruling State Law
	 	   and Order
Restoration Council (SLORC) for its actions to
		   suppress the Muslim
community there and urged the Malaysian Government to
		   defer its entry
                   into Asean.

Abim secretary-general Ahmad Azam Abdul Rahman said such
suppression showed SLORC had no respect for the
		   constructive
                   engagement policy advocated by Asean.

"Myanmar's impending entry to the grouping should be
		   postponed until the
SLORC fully subscribes to the policy."

Earlier, Ahmad Azam led a group of Abim members to
		   hand over a
protest note to Myanmar's ambassador to Malaysia U Saw
		   Htun but he
                   was not in his office.

They attempted to pass it to an embassy official but
		   failed. They then
placed the note in the embassy's letter box.
