  FRIENDS OF BURMA SEEKS THAI KING INTERVENTION

IMPHAL,MANIPUR STATE, MAY 14:

The  friends of Burma Manipur today sought the intervention
ofThailand   King,   Bhumibol  Adulyadej  to  resolved  the
complex  andcritical  crises  and  problems  of  the common
massage of Burma underthe SLORC regime.

A  memorandum sent to  the King said  that the SLORC regime
has  violated the national,  regime and international norms
of human right and democratic governance.

Appreciating  and extending  profound thankfulness  for the
King's   practice  of  welcoming  and  supporting  refugees
neighbouring   countries  with   exemplary  compassion  and
generiosity,it  appealed  the King  to  continue exercising
this  compassion  by  intervening  in  the  case  of  human
dignity.

We   are  shocked  and  distrubed  by  Thailand's  National
security   council's  announcement  of  its  March  11,1997
resolution  to  repatriate  all  Burma  refugees  when  the
situation became safe, it said.

At  least,  one  lake refugees camped  along the Thai-Burma
border.   It added  that the Thai  authorities have already
begun preparations for the mass repatriation. These reports
and  the recent military activities directly contradict the
Thai foreign official's stand that the Burma refugees would
not  be forced back to  their country against their consent
and wish, it said.

The  friends  of  Burma  Appealed  the  king  to  order the
suspension  of repatriation  activities,  to  recognise the
living and newly arriving Burma people as refugees and work
for  the restoration  of peace and  justice,  democracy and
human rights in Burma.

The  memorandum was signed by Mr.O.Joy Singh and Dr.Kailash
Aggarwal  as  convenor and  executive  member respectively.
