	Highlights of the Special ASEAN Ministerial Meeting

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers agreed to admit Cambodia, Laos and
Myanmar into ASEAN at the 30th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in July 1997
in Kuala Lumpur. 

The Chairman of the ASEAN Standing Committee, H. E. Datuk Abdullah Hj.
Ahmad Badawi, will be visiting Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar shortly to
convey the message officially to these three countries. He will also be
consulting with them on the status of their preparations for joining 
ASEAN. 

The Ministers also agreed to invite the Heads of Governments of China, Japan
and Korea to the Second Informal ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this
December. Apart from the ASEAN + 3 Meeting, there will be separate
sessions between the Heads of Government of ASEAN and Japan as well as
between ASEAN and China. 

The Ministers further agreed to the appointment of two Deputy
Secretaries-General for the ASEAN Secretariat. The new Deputy
Secretaries-General are Mr. Immanuel Robert Inkiriwang and Dr. Suthad
Setboonsarng. 

The Ministers also approved the new logo and flag of ASEAN.
