The slight Burmese woman who took on her country's military junta,
enduring six years of house arrest and separation from her English
family, has come to epitomise peaceful resistance to tyranny. Founder of
the National  Leagre of Democracy, she was awarded the Nobel peace prize
in 1995, reinforcing her position as a vociferous thorn in the
